<p>This paper examines the phonological differences between Bahasa Indonesia and Singkil language in linguistic variation and identity among Singkils. Language variation includes one of human language attributes which demonstrated by differences in terms of pronunciation and structure. The objectives of this research are to find out phonological similarities between Bahasa Indonesia and Singkil language, to figure out the differences in the phonological systems of both languages, and to elaborate the attitudes of Singkils students toward their language and Bahasa Indonesia. This research was conducted on the third class of SDN 1 students speaking Singkil in KutaBahari district. Ten students engaged in reading an Indonesian passage. The evidence gathered via observation, analyses of secondary data, structured interviews, and questionnaires show that the sound ᵐb, ᵐp, ⁿc, ⁿd, ⁿg, and ⁿj are not dialects at all. All speakers of Singkil pronounce words containing these sounds with the same pronunciation. It is only possible because of the influence of the language outside (other than the language of Singkil). In this case, some students pronounce [ᵐb] became[b], [ᵐp] into [p], and this is only a very small speaker of Singkil. From this condition, we can conclude that language shift occurs in bilinguals. Bilingualism began when the people move into contact with other people and languages, and also from the other needs. It can be seen from The change [ᶬp] to [p],[ⁿb] to [b],[ⁿɟ] to [ɟ] is one of the language shifts. In the end, the identity of Singkil speakers display in their language attitude towards their language based on 12 questions is mostly positive. The average value obtained was 2, 7. <p><span class="s18"><span class="bumpedFont20">The aim of this study is to explore the role of lexical metaphors in the preservation of cultural heritage among Karo youths, focusing on the traditional practice of using "</span></span><span class="s19"><span class="bumpedFont20">Minyak Pengalun</span></span><span class="s18"><span class="bumpedFont20">," a medicinal oil deeply embedded in the Karo people's ecological and cultural identity. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews and document analysis as the primary methods of data collection. Interviews were conducted with Karo adolescents, cultural experts, and traditional healers, while traditional Karo texts were analyzed to identify metaphors associated with "</span></span><span class="s19"><span class="bumpedFont20">Minyak Pengalun</span></span><span class="s18"><span class="bumpedFont20">." The results indicate that Karo youths have a deep understanding of the metaphors associated with "</span></span><span class="s19"><span class="bumpedFont20">Minyak Pengalun</span></span><span class="s18"><span class="bumpedFont20">," using them actively in cultural practices as a form of cultural resistance. The study also highlights the importance of these metaphors in maintaining Karo cultural identity and ecological knowledge. In conclusion, Karo youths play a critical role in the defense and preservation of their cultural heritage through the active use of lexical metaphors. What types of Illocutionary ritual speech are mostly used in the ritualspeech entitled “Saeba bunuk hau no”. The aims of this research are 1. To know the types of Illocutionary used in the ritual speech entitled “Saeba bunuk hau no” 2. To know the types of Illocutionary ritual speech are mostly used in theritual speech entitled “Saeba bunuk hau no”. The theory that the writer used is the theory of speech act, which this theory inspects how we can find out the illocutionary meaning. The method that the writer used is descriptive qualitative method with techniques of collecting the data are reading the previous research result, find the utterances, analyze the meaning of utterances to identify the types of illocutionary and to know the types of illocutionary are mostly used in the ritual speech Saeba bunuk hau no in the Spaha Village, Kolbano Subdistric, South Central Timor Regency. <p>There is abundant Pashto contemporary literature throughout the country produced by staunchest Afghan writers who depicted the literary, social, cultural, political, and religious aspects of the society. Yet, there is little information, particularly in English language, about the literary life and contribution of Nasir Ahamd Ahmadi. The study aims to disseminate the biographical and literary information about Ahmadi in English. It also provides his literary contribution in modern Pashto literature. The analysis revealed that Lat. Ahmadi was famous for his Pashto novels because of his sweet, local color, and simple linguistic terms. He was a fluent and eloquent writer of Pashto modern novels and short stories which are written for the purpose of reforming Afghan society morally. And, he has published more than twenty five works among which Jojo (2013), Baghdadi Pir (2016), and Akh Watana! (2018) novels had been a lot of popular. The data were primarily collected through Arts students’ monographs in Pashto Departments including some personal communications. Some books were also reviewed in the central library of at Kandahar University for data collection which was analyzed thematically and translated into English professionally. The findings suggest that many Pashtun critics and students love Ahmadi’s artistic works especially the novels and short stories. <p>The objective of this study is to determine whether there is an impact of the extensive reading techniques on the eighth grade students, vocabulary mastery at SMPN2 Kualuh Selatan. This study used a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent pretest-posttest design. The population of this study was all 125 students of grade VIII of SMPN2 Kualuh Selatan. The research sample was taken using a random sampling technique. The number of samples was 50 students. The findings showed that there was a significant increase in the vocabulary mastery of eighth grade students taught using the extensive reading technique. The results showed that the average of the experimental group was 77.5 and was included in the good category. The average of students taught to read using extensive reading techniques is 77.5, the average of students taught to read without using extensive reading techniques is 66.66. <p>This study explores non-English department students' perceptions of the use of YouTube videos as supplementary resources in learning English speaking and conversation. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The analysis shows that non-English students generally find YouTube an engaging and effective tool for learning English. They appreciate its flexibility, accessibility, and the realistic learning experiences it offers. YouTube is particularly valued for improving understanding of English topics and conversations, providing cultural insights, and supporting pronunciation and intonation. It is seen as a personalized and enjoyable learning resource. YouTube is regarded as effective for vocabulary acquisition. Students believe it helps them learn new words, understand word usage in social contexts, and apply vocabulary in real-life conversations. The platform’s clear explanations and frequent phrase repetition improve retention and confidence. In speaking skills, YouTube has a significant impact. It enhances pronunciation, builds confidence, and helps students feel more comfortable speaking English, especially in casual situations. Students get benefits from exposure to various accents and conversation examples, which help improve fluency. However, students face several challenges using YouTube for learning, such as difficulty understanding accents or fast speech, poor video/audio quality, and trouble maintaining focus. There is also a challenge in selecting appropriate videos, and some students feel there is insufficient explanation of vocabulary or a lack of interactive speaking practice. Students suggest several improvements to make YouTube more effective as a learning tool, including the addition of subtitles, more videos on formal and professional conversations, and better video selection guidance. They recommend incorporating interactive quizzes, visuals, and more tailored conversation examples for different learning needs. Additionally, they suggest videos should focus on correcting pronunciation errors and include more exposure to diverse accents. Lastly, students call for guided speaking practice sessions to enhance learning. Overall, students highlight YouTube’s potential as an effective and flexible tool for English learning while offering suggestions to overcome its challenges and enhance its educational value.</p>Tira Nur Fitria

<p>This study analyzes the 2024 U.S. presidential election debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris using the Interpersonal Function framework, specifically Exchange Structure (Move) from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The analysis identifies five Move patterns: "K1", "K2^K1", "K1^K2F", "K1^K2F^K1F", and "A1", along with one dynamic move pattern: Challenge and Response to Challenge (CH-RCH). The findings reveal that Donald Trump adopts a more authoritative and responsive stance in the debate, frequently assuming the role of Primary Knower (K1) to assert his knowledge and authority. He is more engaged in responding to challenges (RCH) rather than initiating them, indicating a focus on defending his credibility. In contrast, Kamala Harris actively challenges (CH) Trump's statements, often taking the Secondary Knower (K2) role by questioning or scrutinizing his claims before asserting her own position. However, she also assumes the Primary Knower (K1) role at times to establish her authority. Trump's debate strategy is centered on defending and reinforcing his credibility, while Harris employs a more confrontational approach, challenging Trump's assertions to cast doubt on his statements. <p>This study compares the representation of hedonism and the shift in thinking of characters in the films The Tinder Swindler (2022) and The Great Gatsby (2013). This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using the theory of hedonism by Epicurus (341-270 BC) as the basis for analysis. This study found that in The Tinder Swindler, hedonism is used as a tool of manipulation in the digital era, while in The Great Gatsby, hedonism reflects the search for happiness that ends tragically. Simon Leviev's character does not experience a change in thinking, still holding on to his hedonistic life principles even though he is caught, while Jay Gatsby experiences the realization that wealth cannot repeat the past. A comparison of social contexts shows that The Tinder Swindler reflects the culture of imagery on social media, while The Great Gatsby reflects the excesses of capitalism in the Roaring Twenties era. The conclusion of this study emphasizes that excessive hedonism can lead to destruction, both in the modern world and in a historical context. This study reminds us that the search for happiness through material things often ends in emptiness.
