Anredera Cordifolia. Steen commonly known as binahong is a medicinal plant known for its antibacterial, anti-obesity, antidiabetic, and antihyperlipidemic properties. In capsule formulation, avicel and pregelatinized starch are commonly used as excipients. Avicel serves as a binder and disintegrant, while pregelatinized starch functions as a filler, binder, and disintegrant. This study aimed to develop a suitable capsule formulation and evaluate the physical characteristics of binahong leaf extract capsules. An experimental post-test only design was employed. The extraction of binahong leaves was carried out using the maceration method with 96% ethanol over a period of 3 × 24 hours. Three capsule formulations were prepared: F1 with 100% avicel, F2 with a 50:50 ratio of avicel to pregelatinized starch, and F3 with 100% pregelatinized starch. Prior studies have demonstrated the feasibility of formulating binahong leaf extract into capsule dosage forms. The evaluation results indicated that Formula II exhibited the most favorable physical characteristics compared to the other formulations. Formula II had a moisture content of 4.3%, flow rate of 8.29 g/s, angle of repose of 27.51°, compressibility of 15.66%, disintegration time of 1.08 minutes, and passed the weight uniformity test. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the choice of filler avicel or pregelatinized starch has a significant impact on the physical characteristics of binahong leaf extract capsules.
