Abstract

This study examined the operational characteristics and species composition of fish sold at four major fish markets in Manokwari: Sanggeng, Wosi, Sowi, and Arfai to understand variations in fishing sources. Observations show that Sanggeng and Wosi function as large-scale fish distribution centers with direct access to landing ports and are therefore dominated by large and medium-sized pelagic species such as Thunnus albacares, Katsuwonus pelamis, Auxis rochei, and Selar crumenophthalmus. This pattern reflects the year-round abundance of pelagic resources in West Papuan waters, which remain the primary target of local fishers. In contrast, Sowi Market displays a mixed profile, characterized by daily fresh landings that include small pelagic species and several demersal fishes such as Lutjanus erythropterus, consistent with its proximity to coral reef ecosystems. Arfai Market shows the simplest structure, dominated by small-scale vendors without processing facilities and relying primarily on secondary distribution from coastal markets. Fish sold in Arfai are generally sourced from small-scale catches or household supplies, resulting in a more limited quantity and lower species diversity compared to the other markets. Across all markets, the family Scombridae was the most dominant group, reflecting both its high economic value and ecological availability in the region. Variations in species composition among markets highlight the close relationship between market location, access to fishing grounds, and surrounding marine ecosystem characteristics. These findings contribute to a better understanding of local fish distribution dynamics and support efforts to develop more sustainable fisheries and market management strategies in Manokwari.
