Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

  1. About the Journal

Journal of Saintech Transfer (JST) is a peer-reviewed and open access references for multidisiplinary studies in science and technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and innovation, published by Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatra Utara.  The journal publishes a good and original manuscripts in the field of dissemination or transfer of science and technology, specifically addressing issues on innovative applications, development of new technologies and efficient solutions that relate to community problems.


  1. Publication

JST is published twice in April and October.


  • Writing Requirements
  1. Article needs to be original, never been published or not under review of another journal, which is written in a statement of originality (Covering Letter).
  1. Article should be written in English and be submitted online via journal website. Author must login in order to make submission.
  2. Article should not exceed 15 pages including embedded figures and tables, without any appendix, and the file should be in Microsoft Office (.doc/.docx) format. It should be prepared  in A4 paper (21cm x 29.7cm) using 2.5 cm for inside margin and 2 cm for top, bottom, and outside margins.
  3. For author convenience, the Journal of Saintech Transfer (JST) has summarized the guidelines in the Author Guidelines document how a paper should be structured,  how elements (headings, figures, references) should be formatted using our predefined styles, etc.


  1. Paper Format
  2. Title, Abstract, and Keywords should be written in English
  3. Title needs to be concise, clear, specific, informative, and describe the contents of the article. Title is written in English, with TNR 18, bold and justified, capital letters only at the beginning of each word, less than 15 words, and no abbreviation.
  4. Author's name is written without academic degrees, completed with institution/affiliation, city and country, and correspondence email. If there is more than one author coming from the same institution/affiliation, then the institution/affiliation is only written once. The affiliations are as full and complete as possible. However, the detail address of the author's affiliations and the corresponding email should be appeared as a footnote. If the authors are at different addresses, numbered superscripts should be used after each surname to reference an author to his/her address. The numbered superscripts should not be inserted using Word’s footnote. Author’s name is written with TNR 13.5, affiliation with TNR 10, and corresponding email with TNR 9.
  5. The abstract should concisely inform the reader of the background and purpose, methods, findings, and conclusions of the transfer of science and technology activities. It is essential that the Abstract clearly states the focus and importance of the work described in the article. The abstract should be no more 250 words. Abstract contains no citation, written in Times New Roman 10 and 1.5 line spacing, both in English and Bahasa Indonesia. Left indent is 2 cm and right indent is 0 cm.
  6. Keywords contain maximum five words/phrases separated with coma and should be justified, 10 TNR (lower case and write alphabetically). Left indent is 2 cm and right indent is 0 cm.


  1. Special Requirements
  2. Chapter title (heading 1) written with capital letters on the first letter of each word, left aligned and bolded. Every section title use 12 pt, bold, Times New Roman. For the section body, text is wrote with 1.5 (one and half) line spacing between lines, 12 pt spacing among paragraphs.
  3. Sub chapter title (heading 2) written with capital letters on the first letter of each word, left aligned and italic.
  4. Chapter, sub chapter and sub sub chapter (heading 3) should be written consecutively in Arabical numeral.
  5. Abbreviations and acronyms should be explained at first usage, not including in the abstract.


  1. Article should contain the features listed below :  
  2. Introduction is no more than 20% of the total page. State the objective of the work and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of the results.
  3. Method is no more than 25% of total page. Provide sufficient details of the process to identify community problems and needs, develop action plans, and implemented methods to solve the community problem through the dissemination or transfer of science and technology.
  4. Results and Discussion is no more than 50% of the total page. Results should be clear and concise. The discussion should explore the impact of dissemination or transfer of science and technology on communities. Avoid extensive citation and discussion of published literature.
  5. Conclusion is the answer to the research question(s) or community problems not a summary of the work. Conclusion is no more than 5% of the total writing page.
  6. Acknowledgments (optional), is gratitude to persons and/or parties who have supported the works, both in funding/facilities and thoughts. Acknowledgments are written at the end of the text before the Reference, not as the footnote of the article title.
  7. References should be cited by giving the last name of author(s) and year in parentheses. If authors are more than three, than the last name of the first author is cited and the others are denoted by et al. References only included those cited in the text, published in the last 3 years, consists minimum 40% of journals with at least one from Journal of Saintech Transfer (JST) (except for articles published in volume 1). For references that are in review, not yet accepted and unpublished are written as “unpublished”, while those that have been accepted but have not published written as “in press”. Reference list should be arranged alphabetically by authors’ name, listing all authors, the full title of articles and journals, publisher and year. Please note that journal names are not to be abbreviated. The references in text and in the list of the manuscript should be cross-checked to ensure similarity.


Some example:

Cake production based on Bennion and Bamford (1997). According to Packaged Fact (2015) ........The evaluation of cake properties by Tharise et al. (2014).  This effect has been studied... (Collins, 1989; Chiappe et al., 1984).

  1. In JST Tables, Graphs, Figures and Equations may be listed as part of the text or as appendix with written provisions as follow.
    • Tables are written using the Microsoft Word Table function with 8 pt of minimum font size, and should be placed after being mentioned in the text. All tables should be referred in the text, and avoid repeating similar table information in the text. Table title is placed above the table, it should be concise and clearly describe content of the table. It should be capitalized for every letter of the word table title with Arabic Numbers (1, 2, 3, etc.) as table numbers. Table only uses 3 horizontal lines separating descriptions and the data, and closing the table. Avoid using tabs for writing tables. The unit of measurement used should be clearly written down.
    • Pictures’ and graphs’ titles are placed under the pictures and graphs. It should be capitalized for every letter of the word picture title with Arabic number as the picture and graph numbers. Minimum and maximum picture or graph sizes are 1 column (8 cm) and 1 page (17 cm), respectively. Avoid using unnecessary background image. Choose 2-dimensional bar graphs with line not solid or block shading. Each axis must be completed with the variable name. For line graph use 1 point (1 point weight). All images must use a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for a 600 dpi color. The unit of measurement used should be clearly written down. Picture and graph are created in the box.
    • Equations are written using Microsoft Equation with Metric/International System for measurement units. The word percent is written as “%” and not separated from the preceding number (for example 10%). Equation is written in right aligned, sorted by sequence number written in brackets. The word “Equation” is not mentioned in the text, except at the beginning of a sentence.
  2. Biography is placed at the end of the text, and are written only for the first author with a maximum of 100 words.


  1. Review Proses and Editorial Policy

Articles are reviewed with a blind review approach. The suitability of articles to be published in JST is determined by a team that consists of Editorial Board and Reviewers. The team recommendation can be categorized in (1) accept without revision, (2) accept with minor revision, (4) accept with major revision and (4) rejected. Articles can be rejected if, for example (1) does not included in JST scope, (2) inconsistent with JST standards or (3) incompatible with the JST writing format.


  1. English Language Editing

Author(s) are required to have their manuscripts edited by a registered professional English language editor before submitting. This certification should be submitted to JST together with edited version of the manuscript. All editing costs will be borne by the author(s). Suggested English language editing services to obtain English language certificate can be found below. Please note that the publication process will not be performed until the English language editing certificate has been provided by the Author(s).
