Interpersonal Metaphors in Eka Kurniawan's "Kitchen Curse: Stories"

This study analyzes interpersonal metaphors—mood and modality transformations—in three stories from Eka Kurniawan’s Kitchen Curse: Stories using a qualitative data condensation method. The results show that mood metaphors make up (30%) of the total, while modality metaphors account for (70%). Among mood metaphors, questions expressed as declaratives are the most common at (33.3%), followed by statements expressed as interrogatives at (30%). Modality metaphors are divided into modalization (68.6%) and modulation (31.4%). Within modalization, probability is the most frequent at (65.7%), and usuality is rare at (2.9%). In modulation, obligation and inclination each occur at (15.7%). Text 3 (Auntie) has the highest proportion of modality metaphors (40%), Text 2 (Caronang) follows with (32.9%), and Text 1 (Easing into a Long Sleep) has the least at (27.1%). Text 1 shows the highest use of mood metaphors (53.4%), linked to its focus on family interactions. These findings demonstrate how interpersonal metaphors influence narrative meaning and character relationships through shifts in mood and modality.
