Post-Publication Discussion

1. Policy Statement

The International Journal Linguistics of Sumatra and Malay (IJLSM) recognizes post-publication discussion as an important component of scholarly communication and the advancement of scientific knowledge. The journal encourages constructive, evidence-based academic dialogue concerning published articles to promote critical engagement, methodological transparency, and the continuous development of linguistic scholarship.

Post-publication discussion provides an opportunity for researchers and readers to raise questions, offer alternative interpretations, identify limitations, clarify methodological issues, and discuss the theoretical or empirical implications of published research. Such discussions are particularly valuable in linguistics, where interpretations of linguistic data, analytical frameworks, and theoretical perspectives may evolve through continued scholarly examination.

IJLSM is committed to facilitating fair, respectful, and academically rigorous discussions while protecting the integrity of the scholarly record.

2. Scope of Post-Publication Discussion

Post-publication discussion may address any substantive scholarly aspect of an article published in IJLSM, including but not limited to:

  • Theoretical Contributions: Critical engagement with the theoretical assumptions, conceptual frameworks, or interpretations presented in the published article.

  • Methodological Considerations: Questions concerning research design, data collection, analytical procedures, sampling, or the interpretation of linguistic evidence.

  • Empirical Findings: Alternative interpretations, additional evidence, or observations that support, qualify, or challenge the article's conclusions.

  • Linguistic Analysis: Discussion of linguistic data, language structures, sociolinguistic patterns, language variation, historical developments, or other issues relevant to the journal's focus and scope.

  • Research Limitations: Clarification of limitations, boundary conditions, or aspects of the research that warrant further investigation.

  • Research Integrity: Evidence-based concerns regarding data accuracy, citation practices, ethical compliance, or other matters that may affect the reliability of the published work.

Comments should make a clear scholarly contribution and remain relevant to the content of the published article. Personal attacks, defamatory statements, discriminatory language, and unsupported allegations are not acceptable.

3. Submission of Post-Publication Comments

Readers and researchers who wish to discuss a published article may contact the IJLSM editorial office through the contact information provided on the journal's website.

Submissions should include:

  1. The title of the published article, the author's name or names, and the article's DOI or URL.

  2. The name and institutional affiliation of the person submitting the comment, together with contact information.

  3. A clear explanation of the scholarly issue being addressed.

  4. Supporting evidence, relevant references, data, or methodological explanations where appropriate.

  5. A statement confirming that the submission is original, has been prepared in good faith, and does not violate the rights or confidentiality of others.

Comments should be concise, clearly argued, and supported by appropriate scholarly evidence. Where a submission raises concerns about research integrity, the journal may request supporting documentation and assess the matter under its Allegations of Research Misconduct policy rather than treating it solely as an academic debate.

4. Editorial Assessment and Review

All submissions intended for post-publication discussion are subject to editorial assessment before publication. The editorial team will consider their relevance, scholarly significance, factual accuracy, clarity, tone, and compliance with publication ethics.

The journal may seek advice from independent experts or invite external peer review when the subject matter requires specialized evaluation. Where a comment directly challenges the methods, findings, or conclusions of a published article, the editorial team may invite the original authors to respond.

The editorial team retains responsibility for determining whether a submission is suitable for publication. Comments may be returned for revision or declined if they lack scholarly substance, contain unsupported claims, fall outside the journal's scope, or fail to meet the journal's ethical and editorial standards.

Editorial decisions will be based on scholarly merit and publication ethics, not on whether a comment supports or challenges the conclusions of the original article.

5. Right of Reply

IJLSM supports the principle that authors should have a reasonable opportunity to respond to substantive scholarly criticism of their published work.

When appropriate, the editorial team may invite the authors of the original article to submit a formal response. Responses should address the issues raised directly, provide relevant evidence or clarification, and maintain a professional and respectful academic tone.

The original commenter may be given an opportunity to clarify the discussion when necessary. However, the journal does not guarantee an unlimited exchange of comments and responses. The editorial team may conclude a discussion when the principal issues have been adequately addressed or when further exchanges are unlikely to provide additional scholarly value.

All published comments and responses must meet the journal's editorial and ethical standards.

6. Publication and Accessibility

Accepted post-publication comments and responses may be published on the IJLSM website as separate scholarly contributions or through another format determined by the editorial team.

Where appropriate, published discussions will be linked to the original article to ensure that readers can easily identify the relationship between the discussion and the work being examined. Bibliographic information and persistent identifiers will be provided where applicable.

Post-publication comments and responses must not be used to misrepresent the original article, its authors, or the nature of the scholarly disagreement. The journal will seek to present the discussion in a manner that is transparent, accessible, and useful to the academic community.

The publication of a comment or response does not automatically imply that IJLSM endorses every argument expressed therein.

7. Corrections and Research Integrity Concerns

Post-publication discussion and formal corrections serve related but distinct purposes. Scholarly disagreement, alternative interpretations, or reasonable differences in analytical judgment do not necessarily indicate that an article requires correction or retraction.

When a discussion identifies a factual error, omission, or other issue that may affect the accuracy or interpretation of a published article, the editorial team will assess whether a correction or another editorial action is warranted.

If credible evidence suggests potential research misconduct or serious concerns about the reliability of an article, IJLSM will handle the matter in accordance with its Allegations of Research Misconduct policy and other applicable publication ethics procedures. Depending on the findings, appropriate action may include a correction, an expression of concern, or retraction.

The journal will distinguish between legitimate scholarly criticism, correctable errors, and substantiated concerns that undermine the integrity of the published record.

8. Ethical Standards and Professional Conduct

All participants in post-publication discussion, including commenters, responding authors, reviewers, and editors, are expected to uphold principles of honesty, fairness, respect, and academic responsibility.

Submissions must not contain plagiarism, fabricated evidence, knowingly misleading claims, undisclosed conflicts of interest that compromise the discussion, or material that violates applicable privacy, confidentiality, or ethical requirements.

Authors and commenters are responsible for ensuring that their arguments are accurately represented and appropriately supported. Personal disagreements must not replace evidence-based scholarly reasoning.

IJLSM reserves the right to decline, edit for clarity and compliance, or remove content when necessary to address substantiated ethical, legal, or publication integrity concerns, while preserving the accuracy and transparency of the scholarly record.

9. Commitment to Scholarly Dialogue

IJLSM views post-publication discussion as an extension of the peer-reviewed publication process and an opportunity to strengthen the quality, reliability, and impact of linguistic research.

By providing a fair mechanism for scholarly comments, author responses, and evidence-based criticism, the journal seeks to foster an academic environment in which published research can be critically examined and developed further.

The journal is committed to ensuring that post-publication discussion remains constructive, transparent, and consistent with recognized principles of publication ethics, including relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), where applicable.
